Abstract

1,115,267. Fluid-pressure brakes. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. 6 Dec., 1966 [21 Dec., 1965], No. 54067/65. Heading F2F. In a fluid-pressure braking system, e.g. a compressed-air system for road vehicles, having both service and emergency spring actuators 22, 11, respectively, the former being supplied by a reservoir 6 via a conduit 18 under control of a driver's valve 15, and the latter having a chamber 10 for compressing the spring 13 which is supplied by a reservoir 5 under control of a manually operated valve 7, the exhaust of the valve 7, which releases fluid from the chamber 10 to apply the spring brake, is connected via a non-return valve 8 to the conduit 18, so that the released fluid can exhaust only via the exhaust 16 of the driver's valve, the valve 8 being resiliently loaded in the forward direction to further retard release from the chamber 10. This ensures that, whatever pressure exists in the chamber 19 of the service actuator 22 at the time the valve 7 is operated to effect an emergency spring application of the brake, the total brake-applying force will not exceed the maximum force due to a service application alone.
