Abstract
1,115,134. Arc furnaces. VSESOJUZNY NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUTE ELEKTROTERMICHESKOGO OBORUDOVANIYA. 23 May, 1966, No. 22847/66. Heading H5H. In an electric arc vacuum furnace having a water-cooled cathode cylinder 5 and an anode crucible 1, the discharge is first struck between a heated trigger electrode 8 and an electrode diaphragm 9 which separates the cathode chamber held at a pressure between 10<SP>-2</SP> and 10<SP>-1</SP> torr from the anode chamber held at a pressure between 10<SP>-4</SP> and 10<SP>-2</SP> torr, and the discharge is then transferred to between the cathode and the anode. Solenoids 3 maintain a magnetic focusing field which increases in intensity towards the anode. In another embodiment the main discharge is operated on A.C. and in a further embodiment with three separate cathode chambers and discharge columns the furnace is connected in a threephase circuit.
