Abstract

1,114,555. Valves. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. 19 Oct, 1965 [20 Oct., 1964; 8 Oct., 1965], No. 44327/65. Heading F2V. In an electrically operated valve, energization of a winding 3 causes a loose ball 6 to engage a seat 9 provided in an inlet passage 4 formed in the core 2, the seat being arranged to hold the ball spaced from the end of the core to provide an air gap 11 to assist unseating of the ball on de-energization. When the ball is unseated, fluid flows to the outlet via helical grooves 12 which cause the ball to be rotated. A threearmed threaded plug 14 having passages 15 holds the ball captive. In the embodiment of Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the casing (21), core (22), cover (26) and ball (30) are made of magnetic material and the coil (24) is formed with radial arms (35, 36) having bushed holes into which the wires are welded. In Fig. 5 (not shown), the loose ball (30) of Figs. 3 and 4 cooperates with a smaller ball (46) movable in a seat member (47) to control flow through an orifice (48) in the latter, the seat member being located in the inlet passage and having helical grooves (49) to cause rotation of ball (46). The seat member of the above-described valves is usually non-magnetic, but in cases where the core or the ball is of a material having high residual flux density and low coercive field, the seat may be magnetic. In these latter cases a small reverse current is required to enable the fluid to unseat the valve.
