Abstract

1305774 Valves G L LANG 28 April 1970 [4 June 1969] 20316/70 Heading F2V [Also in Division H1] An A.C. solenoid valve (Fig. 1) comprises a cylindrical armature biased by underlying spring 2 engaging ring 7 and shoulder 11 and slidable in ferromagnetic housing 3, a projecting coned valve stem 4 engaging fluid orifice 6 when closed on de-energization; the armature surface being then separated from inner surface of housing 3 so that on energization the armature rises and opens the valve. The body is of plastic or metal with inlet and outlet pipe fittings 14, 22, and inlet strainer 15. Housing 3 is flanged for sealing contact with elastic ring 20 by pressure plate 19 screwed down. The valve seat 25 is of elastomeric material in a recess 26 of body 9 coaxial with the outlet duct and its bore controls the required flow. A solenoid winding 27 on spool 28 is coaxially fitted over housing 3 and encloses polepiece 30 attached to magnetic steel shell 31 surrounding the coil and fitting over housing 3 to complete the magnetic circuit. The armature enclosure exerts a damping effect on fluid therein controlled by the clearance around the armature, by providing leakage grooves, or axial fluid passages. In a modification (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) the polepiece comprises a low hysteresis longitudinally slotted sleeve surrounding a mild steel inner cylinder partially relieved in diameter to provide a peripheral gap to give phase retardation and splitting of the magnetic flux.
