[Also in Division F2] Apparatus for measuring a force comprises a base 10 in which a chamber 15 is formed to receive a flow of fluid at constant pressure through a restricted inlet 17, a force sensing cup 26 inverted over an annular valve seat cemented to the body 10 round the outlet of the chamber 15, and a platform 33 with integral pin 32 engaging a conical hole in the cup 26 to apply thereto the force to be measured thus varying the outlet flow area under the rim of the cup 26 so that the pressure in the chamber as shown on a communicating pressure gauge is a measure of the force. The measurement range can be changed by using cups 26 of different diameters and a ball type relief valve is set appropriately for the range chosen in order to safeguard the gauge. A restricted opening 35 to the port 37 eliminates pulsations in the gauge. In high speed testing of compression springs, a plate 45 with integral sleeve 46 is connected to the spindle 48 of a micrometer 50 supported by a sleeve 58 on a post 54 in one of a number of positions. The sleeve is located on the post by a wedge on a depending leaf spring engaging one of a number of grooves spaced e. g. one inch apart from which it can be readily disengaged by pressing inwardly a projecting bar.
