Abstract

Attack of the steroid nucleus in the preparation of 17-oxygenated steroids by microbiological conversion of steroids containing a C17 aliphatic group of at least 8 carbon atoms by organisms of the genus Mycobacterium is prevented by the addition of nickel, cadmium, cobalt, lead and/or selenite ions. Examples describe the preparation of 1,4-androstadiene3,17-dione and 4-androstene-3,17-dione.
