Abstract

1,113,841. Cable terminations. ELASTIC STOP NUT CORPORATION OF AMERICA. 9 March, 1966 [16 April, 1965], No. 10446/66. Heading H2E. A tube 24 of electrically conductive elastomerio material is used to adapt conventional high voltage power cable stress cones, which are manufactured for terminating cables having no bedding tape, so that they may be used for terminating cable that is provided with bedding tape. The cable coverings are stripped back in steps, as shown. The adapter tube 24 is a snug fit over the conductive bedding tape 14, and is in electrical contact therewith, so that the terminal end of the tape is held void free over the cable insulation 12. The electrically conductive elastomeric outer cone 36 of the stress cone, which is moulded to insulating elastomeric inner cone 32, fits over the tube 24 in waterproof and electrical contact. The metallic shield 16 between the bedding tape 14 and protective shield 18 is earthed by a wire 30 to disipate charge that accumulates on the bedding tape. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the cable is lead sheathed and has bedding tape stripped back to the outer sheath, and the tube 24 fits snugly over the insulation 12 and has an enlarged sleeve portion at one end which fits over the sheath and which has an inwardly tapering shoulder to make electrical contact with the terminal rim of the bedding tape and sheath and to exclude any trapped air.
