Abstract

In a process for producing composite materials, fibres, chips, or particles are mixed with chopped thermoplastic film, and spread over an air-permeable support; a stream of hot gas, e.g. air, is sucked or forced through the mixture, and the mixture is moulded under heat and pressure. After the treatment with hot air, the mixture may be subjected continuously or at intervals while hot to one or more pressing <PICT:1113792/C3/1> operations. A second layer of chopped film may be applied to the moulded composite material under the influence of heat. The fibres, chips, or particles may be wood, leather, or animal, vegetable or synthetic fibres, e.g. a mixture of thermoplastic fibres, or inorganic materials. The chopped thermoplastic film may be polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, or polypropylene, and may be 0.03-0.5 mm. thick and 12-100 mm.2 in surface area. Apparatus may comprise a screen belt with or without one or more screen drums 9 and 10, and the mixture may follow an S-shape path over and between the drums.
