Abstract

1,113,621. Liquid separator. D. V. GOUGH. 4 Aug., 1965 [3 Sept., l964], No. 36191/64. Heading BID. A mixture of fuel oil and water enter at 22 a lower settling chamber 8 and the oil rises past valve 12, 14 into an upper chamber 6 and leaves by outlet 26, until accumulating water in the lower chamber 8 lifts the float 16 to close the valve 12, 14, whereupon an alarm signal is given. The alarm signal may be operated directly by the raising of the float 16, but is preferably actuated by the reducing pressure in chamber 6 produced by the diesel engine to which outlet 26 connects, after closure of valve 12, 14. The reduced pressure deforms a diaphragm 28, closing contacts 34, 36 which operate a visual or audible warning device 37, or the movement of rod 32 may be seen through transparent cap 38. The water may be drained from chamber 8 by opening valve 25, and screw 42 may then be withdrawn opening a by-pass passage 40 to enable the valve 12, 14 to open again by equalising the pressures in chambers 6, 8. Valves 25, 42 may be servo operated from a remote point such as a driving cab. The device is connected downstream of the fuel tank, with outlet 25 below the bottom of the tank, and the separated water in the tank may then be drained out through device and outlet 25.
