Abstract

1,113,389. Foamed styrene polymer structure. S. OKI. 10 Nov., 1966 [10 Nov., 1965; 18 Aug., 1966 (2)], No. 50402/66. Heading B5A. A foamed styrene polymer bonded to a facing material is prepared by providing the facing material in a mould, applying an unsaturated polyester composition and allowing it to gel, changing the mould with foamable styrene polymer and heating the mould contents to a temperature above the softening point and below the fluid point of the styrene polymer to expand the foam and cure the unsaturated polyester composition. The facing material may be sheets such as paper, fibres, fabrics, metal, wood and thermosetting resins and is preferably a polyester resin sheet reinforced with one of paper, glass or polymeric or asbestos fibre or fabric or granulated marble. It may be formed in situ. The unsaturated polyester composition contains preferably 25-120% by weight (based on polyester) of a vinyl monomer, 0À5-5% by wt. of a curing catalyst and 30-140% by wt. (both based on polyester and vinyl monomer) of a filler. The foam is preferably of polystyrene and is heated to 100-140‹ C. to foam the polystyrene and cure the resin.
