Abstract

1,113,303. Pulse jet propulsion plant. H. MAERSK-MÏLLER. Feb. 28, 1966, No. 8712/66. Headings F1J and F1L. A pulse jet having a combustion chamber 10 and a propulsion nozzle 11 has a fuel injection device provided with an automatic control unit 16 which continuously varies the time interval between successive combustion pulses so as to reduce the noise emitted by the pulse jet. The unit 16 varies the rate of fuel flow through the burner 15 and/or the time in each cycle at which fuel injection is started, and may additionally vary the time at which the sparking plug 19 is fired. A modified pulse jet, Fig. 2 (not shown), has, in addition to the unit 16 controlling the rate of fuel flow or time of injection, a control unit (13) which continuously varies the axial position of a sleeve surrounding the nozzle 11 so as to vary the length of the nozzle and thus further control the interval between successive pulses. The two control units (13,16) may be inter-connected and may comprise cams, variable gears, electronic devices, or electro-mechanical devices such as uniselectors.
