Abstract

Polyolefins and polyamides are preserved, particularly against oxidative degradation, by incorporating therein an acyl-p-phenylenediamine of formula <FORM:1113056/C3/1> where R1 and R3 are hydrogen or alkyl, R2 is alkyl, substituted alkyl or cycloalkyl or together with another R2 represents an alkylene group joining two acyl-p-phenylenediamino groups, and R4 is an acyl group derived from an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic carboxylic acid, and in which the benzene ring may optionally be substituted by one or more alkyl groups. Specified polymers are polypropylene, polyhexamethylene adipamide, poly-(o -aminocaproic acid) and poly-(cis-aminoundecanoic acid). Other conventional ingredients, e.g. waxes, fillers and pigments, carbon black, zinc oxide, stearic acid, and other stabilizers such as dilauryl thiodipropionate, organic phosphites, thiophosphites, phosphates and thiophosphates, dialkyl dithiocarbamates and 2-hydroxy-4-octyloxy benzophenone, may also be incorporated. Many suitble substituents for the p-phenylenediamines are listed and in Examples (4) polypropylene is stabilized with N,N-diethyl-N1-stearoyl p-phenylenediamine with and without dilauryl thiodipropionate, and N,N-dimethyl-N1-stearoyl p-phenylenediamine, and (5) a formic acid solution of polyhexamethylene adipamide is stabilized with N-ethyl-N hydroxyethyl - N1 - stearoyl - p - phenylene diamine.ALSO:Acyl derivatives of substituted p-phenylene-diamines of formula <FORM:1113056/C2/1> where R1 and R3 are hydrogen or alkyl, R2 is alkyl, substituted alkyl or cycloalkyl or together with another R2 forms an alkylene group joining two p-phenylenediamino groups, and R4 is an acyl group derived from an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic carboxylic acid are prepared by reacting acyl chlorides with substituted p-phenylenediamines in chloroform in the presence of pyridine. In examples, N1-stearoyl derivatives are prepared by reacting stearoyl chloride with (1) N,N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine, (2) N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine, (3) N,N-di-sec.-butyl-p-phenylenediamine, and (5) N-ethyl-N-hydroxyethyl-p-phenylenediamine.
