Abstract

1,113,013. Inverting. PLESSEY-UK Ltd. 3 Sept., 1965 [13 July, 1964], No. 28836/64. Heading H2F. A pulse-width varied inverter comprises a bridge of switching elements which may be gas tubes, or as shown thyristors SCR1 ... SCR4, a commutating capacitor C across the output diagonal, and commutating inductors L1, L2, the arrangement being such that with two thyristors conducting, say SCR1 and SCR4, a third is fired, say SCR2, which shuts off SCR1 and SCR3 and is then itself shut off. Subsequently the opposite pair SCR2 and SCR3 are fired to commence the opposite half cycle of the output. As shown the output is derived from a transformer T having taps to which diodes D1 ... D4 are connected. When SCR3 fires to terminate the positive conducting pulse capacitor C discharges through D1, SCR3, and L2, so that SCR1 is back biased by transformer action in T and is shut-off. Also by transformer action in L2 SCR4 is shut off, SCR3 is itself shut off by resonant voltage swing in the circuit L2, C. SCR2 and SCR3 are then fired together and subsequently are shut off by a similar commutating action on firing SCR1. In a further embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the output transformer is dispensed with. Resistors are included in series with the diodes, these circuits being utilized in the shutting-off action.
