Abstract
1,112,671. Finishing yarns. T.M.M. (RESEARCH) Ltd. 27 July, 1965 [28 April, 1964], No. 17593/64. Headings DIF and DIW. A multifilament yarn is bulked by continuously forming the yarn into a balloon e.g. by a ring and traveller take-up, false-twisting device or passage of yarn from a rotating supply package to winding mechanism as in an uptwister machine, heating the yarn as it balloons and whilst causing the balloon to contact a surface, withdrawing the yarn from the balloon and, optionally, subjecting the yarn to a supplementary heat treatment prior to take-up. In the resultant yarn, component filaments are formed as helices with varying coil pitch or helix angle in random manner: such pitch or angle in one section of yarn may be at least twice that in another section, Fig. 5 (not shown). In the draw-twister shown in Fig. 1, yarn 11 is drawn and then passed to a guide 12, through a heater 13 (of conical internal bore which may be continuous or formed by an enclosed electric element wound into an expanding helix) thence (with a balloon formation 16) to take-up 14 to be wound on a package 15. As shown in Fig. 4, a balloon 16 is formed by a rotating disc 23 between heater 13 and a supplementary heater 25 comprising constricting elements 27, 28, through which yarn passes to take-up.
