Abstract

High strength ore pellets are produced by a process in which the ore to be pelletized is mixed with 10 to 50% (by weight based on the dry weight of the resulting mixture) of prefired ore. The proportion of prefired ore in the pellets may be higher in the outer zone than in the interior of the pellets and the pellets may consist of a core free of prefired material and a plurality of shells containing increasing proportions of prefired material. The prefired material may be produced by subjecting sintered pellets to a stress which is sufficiently high to produce the required amount of prefired material in the form of abraded material and broken pellets, or it may be produced in a down-draught sintering plant. Alternatively, fine grained ore may be heated to a temperature in or slightly below its sintering temperature range whilst maintaining its particle size and added to the crude material to be pelletized or the material which is admixed with the ore may be prefired under reducing conditions to give a prereduced prefired product. Examples relate to the products of pelletized iron ore.
