1,112,574. Plate-type heat exchangers; air heating stoves. URQUHART'S (1926) Ltd. 24 Nov., 1964 [3 Dec., 1963], No. 47626/63. Heading F4S. A heat exchange unit comprises an assembly of corrugated metal sheets joined in pairs along their corrugations to form substantially tubular passages 104 in each pair, said pairs being spaced apart to form undulating passages at right angles to the tubular passages. Heat exchange units 118-121, of the above construction, are arranged to form a chamber 122 and are enclosed within an outer casing 123a-123d, the units being held in position by end plates 111, 112 formed with apertured spigots 116 locating the tubular passages. Plenum chambers are provided at two corners of the chamber so that fluid to be heated enters at one plenum chamber, divides and flows through the undulating passages of two or more units and leaves at the other plenum chamber, the transverse undulating passages of two units along adjoining sides of the chamber being aligned to form continuous passages around said adjoining sides. In use, combustion products from an oil-fired burner flow through the chamber 122 from a duct 140 at one end to a baffle 132 at the other, where they are deflected back through the tubular passages of the heat exchanger units, and are exhausted at the entry end. Air to be heated enters one plenum chamber through a duct 124, the heated air being taken off at duct 128. The apparatus may be provided with a heat insulating lining.
