Abstract
Fibresheet, board or other shaped bodies of fibre material are made by pressing separately two or more moist fibre boards, pressing into at least one surface of each a pattern of alternating recesses and projections, the recesses being sunk so that the material at the bottoms of the recesses is compressed to a greater hardness or compactness than the rest of the material, bringing together two or more such boards so that the projections on at least one surface of each fit and mesh in the recesses of a surface of an adjacent board, and combining the boards to form a composite body. A binding agent may be applied to the joining surfaces, and the projections may be made a little smaller than the recesses to leave room for it. The recesses may be parallel to or across one another, or may be in the shape of pyramids, parallelepipeds, cones or cylinders. The pressing may be carried out between pressing plates, of which at least one that imparts the pattern is heated to dry the fibre material, and the sides or flanks of the projections may be so large that the time taken to dry the projections is approximately the same as that taken to dry the material in the bottoms of the recesses to the same moisture content. The side walls of the projections may diverge towards the bases of the recesses. At least one outer surface of the combined body may be levelled by polishing rolls, or coated.
