Abstract
Tetraalkyl lead compounds are prepared by reacting an alkali metal lead alloy and an alkyl halide, and contacting the reaction mass, in the absence of an aq. liq. phase, with a gas or vapour inert to the reaction products at a temp. of 25-200 DEG C. to vaporize the tetraalkyl lead which is recovered. The inert gas or vapour may be: N2, air, super-heated steam, a rare gas e.g. He, alkyl halides e.g. of 1-5 C atoms and preferably the same as used in the synthesis, or hydrocarbons having e.g. 1-10 C atoms. The velocity of the gas at contact may be from 0.05 ft/sec. to sonic velocity and the pressure may be 20 ins. vac up to 300 p.s.i.g. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of a minor proportion of an inert diluent, e.g. an inert hydrocarbon which may be vaporized with the inert gas and it may be present as 5-25 parts by wt. per 100 parts of Pb in the alloy. The gas and reaction mass may be contracted by fluidizing a bed of the mass with the gas, said bed optionally having an overflow arrangement for the stripped solid, or by feeding the gas through a bed of the mass at a velocity insufficient to support the bed, which may be static or agitated by a stirrer or vibrator. The inert gas may be recycled after removal of the tetraalkyl lead therefrom
