A sealed magnetic reed contact unit is filled with a mixture of gases comprising about 97% nitrogen, 3% hydrogen and between 1 and 0À005% of organic compounds without sulphur. The compounds may be cyclical such as ring compounds of hydrocarbons with aliphatic side chains. Water vapour may also be present.
