Abstract

Benzene is produced by thermally dealkylating alkyl aromatics or hydrocarbon oils containing them in the presence of up to 20 weight per cent of tarry matter by-produced in a preceding dealkylation stage and more than an equimolar amount of hydrogen at 600-800 DEG C. and 1-25 ats., the mixture being maintained under the above process conditions for more than 0.2 second. The feedstock may be selected from toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, trimethylbenzene, reformed oil of naphtha, gas oils, mineral oils, crude benzene and thermal cracked residue oil by-produced in the steam cracking of naphtha.
