Abstract
A method of calcining soda-containing alumina comprises incorporating in the alumina a proportion of silica or siliceous material capable of combining with soda at temperatures greater than 1100 DEG C. and fluidizing the mixture at a temperature greater than 1100 DEG C., but preferably not greater than 1450 DEG C. The silica or siliceous material may be incorporated in a ratio of 2 to 20% by weight of the alumina, and may be in the form of silica gel or sand. To permit separation of the particles of silica or siliceous material from the particle of alumina, the particles are arranged to have different particle sizes, e.g. 72 to 10 B.S. mesh for the silica or siliceous particles and 50 to 325 B.S. mesh for the alumina particles. The silica or siliceous material should preferably have a particle size larger than that of the alumina by at least 25 B.S. mesh. The mixture of alumina and silica or siliceous material may be fluidized with nitrogen and the bed heated electrically with an external graphite resistor.
