Thermoplastic synthetic-resin tapes having a plurality of longitudinal parallel solid monofilaments connected by film portions integral therewith, the film portions being thinner than the monofilaments, are made by extruding by an inflation method the hot molten resin through a die 3 with a thin circular slit 1 having a number of enlarged grooves 2 to form a tube; this is cut into tapes of suitable width, which are then stretched. The tape may then be fibrillized, to form a bundle of monofilaments. The film may be preheated before cutting, and the tapes may be stretched while in contact with the surface of heated rollers. Before the cutting step, the tube may be cooled quickly or slowly, and may be flattened by being folded double. The grooves 2 may extend on each side of the slit, or on one side only, or on each side alternately, and may be e.g. circular, semicircular, square, rectangular or triangular. The distance between adjacent grooves is preferably 0À8-4À0 times the groove width, and the slit thickness is preferably 0À5-0À8 times the groove thickness. The width and thickness of the groove are preferably 0À8-1À2 mm. Thermoplastic resins which may be used include polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamides, polyvinylidene chloride, polystyrene, and polyesters. An apparatus has feed roll 2 and heated roll 3 from which the film proceeds to tension roll 4 via heated rolls 7, 8, 9 and 10. The film is cut after leaving 3 by a plurality of cutter blades 12. The tapes are finally wound on take-up rolls 20, 21 and 22.
