Abstract

1,111,389. Coiling wire on tubes. SIMONCARVES Ltd. (K. Vogt). 5 Jan., 1966 [7 Oct., 1964], No. 40872/64. Heading B3E. A method of coiling a tensioned wire about a tube comprises supporting the tube for rotation about its axis, clamping one end of a wrapping wire to a clamping point adjacent the tube, positively rotating the clamping point and the tube about the tube axis to thereby wind wire on the tube, tensioning the wire as it is wrapped on the tube by supplying wire to the tube at a speed less than the peripheral speed of the tube, and applying a counter-stress to the tube adjacent the position of winding on the wire to reduce strain in the tube due to the tension in the wire. Wire 43, from a reel 42, to be wound on a tube 8 supported vertically on a table 3 rotated through variable ratio drive means 35 from a motor 36, is clamped to the table 3 by means 44. The wire 43 passes from the reel 42 around multi-grooved braking rollers 22, 23 on a carriage 13 and over a guide pulley 28 to the tube 8. The pulley 28 is carried by an arm 27 pivoted, e.g. adjustably, at one end to an arm 20, e.g. telescopic, longitudinally displaceable in the carriage 13 and carrying rollers 26 engaging the tube 8, and a compression-spring rod 24 carried by the carriage 13. The carriage 13 is moved axially of the tube 8, during winding, by hoisting means 14, 15. The braking roller 22 is driven through a shaft 38 from the motor 36, and the roller 23 from the roller 22, the speed at which wire is unwound from the rollers 22, 23 being less than the circumferential speed of the tube 8. To maintain constant the prestress in the wire 43 passing from the rollers 22, 23 to the tube 8, the rod 24 controls by means 25, 31, 32 the variable ratio means 35 in the drive to the table 3. Two coils at each end of the winding on the tube are clamped together by clips 45.
