Abstract
1,111,332. Igniting gas burners. G. DAVIES. 4 May, 1965 [4 May, 1964], No. 18481/64. Headings F4F and F4T. A pilot jet 11 is ignited by a catalytic ignition filament 21 energized by a switch 19, 24 from a secondary cell 15 which is charged by a thermo-electric generaltor 18 heated by the pilot jet 11. The switch 19, 24 comprises a fixed contact 19 and a movable contact 24 carried by a bi-metal strip 25 heated by the pilot jet 11. The cell charging circuit includes a further switch comprising a fixed contact 22 and a movable contact 23 also carried by the bi-metal strip 25. When the pilot jet is not burning the first switch 19, 24 is closed and energizes the filament 21 and when the pilot jet is burning the further switch 22, 23 is closed and the generator 18 charges the cell 15. The charging circuit and the filament circuit are also controlled by a diaphragm switch 14 which is closed by the gas pressure in the line 12 supplying the pilot jet. The filament is also carried by the bi-metal strip 25. The generator comprises fifteen units of iron disilicide. The pilot jet is used to ignite the burners of a gas cooker or fire through a flame tube 26 or to ignite a plurality of burners arranged to heat a rail of a railway, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown). Each burner comprises a ceramic brick (33) having fine perforations (34) through which gas passes to burn on the front of the brick, and a shroud (35) confining the hot gases to the rail. The flame tube 26 extends into the shroud of one burner and further flame tubes connect the shrouds of the other burners. The burners may be supplied with propane from separate bottles or from a single tank.
