Abstract
In the production of glass reinforced with separate parallel wires, molten glass is fed over a forehearth and casting lip to a pair of forming rolls and the separate, parallel, reinforcing wires are introduced longitudinally between the casting lip and the forming rolls into the mass of molten glass formed immediately below the casting lip, the wires being guided into and drawn into the molten glass. Molten glass 17 is fed over a lip 16 of a forehearth 14 to form a mass 18 between forming rolls 10, 11 with an apron 19 below the lip block 16 into which the parallel wires 39 are fed, the formed and wired glass 77 being supported on rollers 78 to an annealing lehr. Each wire 39 is supported in a tube 22 on a carrier 21 pivotally mounted by a shaft 51 on a main frame 20 and for lengthwise movement by a rack (49) and pinion (55). The frame 20 is mounted between a rail 29 and a bracket 33 on fixed supports, the frame 20 being adjustable from side to side of the rolling machine forehearth 14 by wheels 28 and rollers 32 and also vertically by means of threaded rods 31 and 35. Each tube 22 fits into an aperture 38 in a wire feed block 37 extending across the width of the wired glass, each aperture 38 being curved to feed the wires to the tapered top of <PICT:1111237/C1/1> the block 37. With adjustment of frame 20 and carrier 21, the wires 39 can be delivered close to the bottom of lip 16. Block 37 is mounted on a hollow support 43 fed with cooling water through supporting pipes 44, (45) slidably mounted in clamping blocks 46, 46a , (47), (47a ) on the carrier 21. The tubes 22 are supported on the carrier 21 by apertured cross-bars (40), (42) and the flared lower end 381 leads alternate wires 39 to an upper and a lower bank of wire reels 62, 63, each bank having alternate pairs of reels 64, 65 and 66, 67, respectively, supported by individual shafts (71) in angular slots 72, 73 in plates 69 and 74, 75 in plates 70, the plates 69, 70 being mounted, as by welding, in angle member 26 and channel member 25.
