Abstract

PURPOSE:To work high quality, long-sized, slender glass for optical fiber by heating raw material glass with a heat source which moves in the longitudinal direction of the glass and by supporting the vicinity of the heat-irradiated part with a deformation control means wich moves together with the source to prevent the glass from curving. CONSTITUTION:By being heated with moving heat source 4 glass material 1 held in the horizontal state and rotated forms heat-irradiated part B. By actively supporting the vicinity of part B with a deformation control means material 1 is prevented from bending at part (softened part) B. As the means, for example, support device 5 is so attached that it can freely move together with source 4. Material 1 is fed into leading pass 11 of device 5 and supported with support rollers 9a, 9b, 10a, 10b to hold part B straight without deforming in horizontal and vertical directions.
