Abstract

1,111,114. Sampling liquids. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 22 March, 1966 [26 March, 1965], No. 12682/66. Heading B8N. [Also in Division B4] A sampling device for radioactive liquid as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises means 48 for introducing an empty sample pot 6 to a first station 36, pot-carrying means, such as an arm 20 operated by a jack 14, for transferring the pot to a second station 2 where the sample is taken and then transferring the pot to a third station 38, and means 62 for ejecting the filled pot from the arm at the third station. The pot 6 to be filled is introduced on to the first station 36 through a retractable tube 48. The piston 18 of the jack is operated by fluid through a pipeline 26 and when the piston is in its uppermost position, a key 30 emerges from a mouthpiece 24 to allow rotation by a handle 22. The arm 20 is lowered on to the first station 36 and the pot gripped by lipped-type packing in a recess in the end of the arm. The arm is then raised and rotated to the second station 2 where the pot is lowered on to a needle 4 which penetrates a stopper 47 to fill the pot with the liquid sample, the stopper being made of an elastomer which recloses on to itself after the pot has been withdrawn from the needle. The pot is then conveyed to a position above the third station 38 and the pot ejected from the arm into a container 58 by a retractable push-rod 62. A slidable trap door 66 in the base of the device is then opened for emptying the pot through a conduit 68. The push-rod 62 and its sleeve 60 is replaced by a tube similar to the tube 48 for loading the container into the third station 38. The device is sheathed with lead and provided with an inspection porthole 10 covered with lead glass, a mirror 80 and lighting system 82. The device is supported by a plate 88 and may be connected to a probe bottle (90), Fig. 4 (not shown), in which the lower end of the needle (4) is immersed. The bottle is connected via a deflector (92) and filter (94) with either atmosphere (95) or a vacuum system (97). Vacuum in the bottle causes liquid to be drawn up from a reservoir through a tube (91) and at a certain level the liquid closes an electrical contact for connecting the bottle with atmosphere. Some of the liquid enters the pot (6) through the needle. The process is repeated until the desired amount of sample is taken, the pot then being raised automatically by the arm.
