Abstract

Insoluble polymers of N-vinyl lactams of the formula <FORM:1110970/C3/1> wherein R1 and R2 are hydrogen, alkyl or aryl, n1 and n are 0 to 5 but only one of n1 and n may be 0, and Y represents <FORM:1110970/C3/2> are used as components of tobacco compositions or as components of filter plugs themselves serving as components of cigarettes, pipes, cigars, or cigar or cigarette holders. The insoluble polymers may be prepared by heating the monomers at elevated temperatures in the presence of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal, or an oxide, hydroxide, alkoxide, hydride or borohydride thereof. The examples relate to the use of poly-N-vinyl-pyrrolidone in admixture with cellulose acetate in filter plugs or with tobacco.ALSO:Insoluble polymers of N-vinyl-lactams are used to reduce the tar content of tobacco smoke either (1) by direct incorporation into the tobacco or (2) by serving as a component of a filter plug, itself serving as a component of a cigarette, pipe, cigar, or a cigar or cigarette holder. The filter plugs normally also comprise conventional fibrous material such as cellulose acetate. In the examples filter plugs for cigarettes are made from mixtures of N-vinyl pyrrolidone with cellulose acetate or tobacco.
