Abstract

A thermoplastic graft polymer is prepared by adding to an aqueous dispersion containing less than 60 parts of a butadiene polymer, a formaldehyde sulphoxylic salt and a peroxide (including hydroperoxides and peroxy acids), adding more than 40 parts of the following monomers, vinyl aromatic monomer, methyl methacrylate and acrylonitrile, and then polymerizing the mixture (the parts are by weight based on 100 parts of butadiene polymer and monomers used). The butadiene polymer contains at least 50% by weight of butadiene and more than 80% of the particles are less than 0.1m in diameter when the monomers are added. The sulphoxylic salt may be sodium or zinc formaldehyde sulphoxylate. The peroxide may be diisopropylbenzene hydroperoxide, cumene hydroperoxide, tertiary butyl hydroperoxide, di-tertiary butyl peroxide, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, lauroyl peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, ammonium persulphate, potassium persulphate and hydrogen peroxide. The monomers consist of 5 to 90% by weight (of total monomer) of vinyl aromatic monomer, 5 to 50% of methyl methacrylate and 5 to 60% of acrylonitrile. The sulphoxylate and peroxide are used respectively in amounts of 0.5-10 parts and less than 3.0 parts by weight, based on 100 parts by weight of butadiene polymer and monomer.
