Abstract
Compounds of general formula <FORM:1110769/C2/1> in which R1 represents an organic radical, R2 is an alkyl (including cycloalkyl) radical, n is an integer, and X and Y each represent an organic radical, a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom, are used in solution for producing mutants from plants. R1 and R2 may be, for example, methyl, ethyl, propyl, tertiary butyl or cyclohexyl. The compound 1 - chloro - 1 - tert - butyl sulphonyl-2 - methyl - nitrosamino - ethylene (R1 is tertiary butyl, R2 is methyl, X is chlorine, Y is hydrogen and n is 1 in the above formula) is prepared by (a) reacting tert-butyl mercaptan with trichloroethylene in the presence of sodium ethylate to give 1,2-dichloro-1-tert.-butylthio ethylene; (b) oxidizing the product from (a) with peracetic acid to give 1,2-dichloro-1-tert.-butyl sulphonyl-ethylene; (c) reacting the product from (b) with methylamine to give 1-chloro - 1 - tert. - butyl sulphonyl - 2 - methyl-aminoethylene; and (d) reacting the product from (c) with sodium nitrite in the presence of acetic acid. If propylamine is used instead of methylamine the corresponding compound in which R2 is -CH2C2H5 is obtained. The products are used in a solution of 2% dimethysulphoxide in water to produce plant mutants.
