Abstract

Light-weight cement structural elements, particularly single-storey wall blocks, are produced from a mixture of lime granules obtained as waste products in the soda industry, a silica-containing material, water and a leavening agent, the lime granules having a free lime content of at least 8% by weight and constituting at least 70% by weight of the total solids. The mixture is hardened in a vertical mould with steam under pressure to give a product of low, uniform density. The lime granules are described in Specification 1,099,773 and contain free lime, CaCO3 and di- and tri-calcium silicates and aluminates. The silica-containing material may be quartz and the leavening agent aluminium powder. An example specifies lime granules and quartz in the proportions 75%: 25% by weight, 30-40% by weight water based on the lime granules plus quartz, and 240 gm. aluminium powder per cubic metre.
