Abstract

Articles are formed from initially dry particulate cement and fibre materials by a process comprising the steps of tumbling the materials together in a mixing zone whilst spraying water into said zone, the materials dropping freely through the air so that the individual particles thereof become coated with water; compressing and shaping the resulting non-cohesive particulate mass; and curing the shaped mass. The mixing zone may be a conventional cement mixer. The cement material may be Portland cement, or a mixture thereof with silica flour, diatomite, clay, talc or volcanic ash. The fibre material is preferably asbestos, but may also be one or more of glass, synthetic plastic, hemp, bagasse, coconut or bamboo. The water may contain dissolved solids, e.g. sodium silicate or calcium chloride.
