Abstract

111,064. Stuart, F. L. July 12, 1917. Conveying and elevating apparatus; staiths and elevated structures.-Apparatus for loading and storing coal, ore, &c. of the kind in which means is provided for transferring the material from trucks to conveyers which deliver to storage bins, ships, barges, &c., is designed to handle rapidly large quantities of material with little breakage. The apparatus is shown in side elevation in Figs. 1 and 2, Fig. 2 being a continuation of Fig. 1. The trucks A are run on to cradles B<1> which can be tilted about a pivot b to discharge into a shoot C also hinged at band counterbalanced by weights C<1>. The shoot has a receiving aperture e<4>, Fig. 1, and a discharge gate E, Fig. 6, and is raised and lowered by tackle c<2> and a hoisting drum c<1>. The cradle B<1> and shoot C are moved together so that the material is transferred gradually and without much fall. From the shoot, the material passes to any one or more of three short highspeed belt conveyers G<1>, G<2>, G<3> through shoots f<1>, f<2>, f<3> provided with gates g<1>, g<2>, g<3>. The conveyers G<1>, G<2>, G<3> deliver either to conveyers H, H<1> leading to a storage house I or to conveyers K leading to loading towers J. The conveyer H is supported on an inclined truss L swinging about a vertical pivot l and supported by trolleys running on a curved track l<1>. The conveyer H<1> is supported by a truss L<1>, Fig. 3, similarly pivoted at its lower end and supported at its upper end by a curved track l<2> attached to the storage house. The upper part of each conveyer is carried by a hinged boom L<2> which is raised or lowered by tackle L' so as to deiiver the material with little fall into bins i, Fig. 1, each having a pair of discharge spouts delivering to the conveyers K by conveyers M. Each loading tower J is movable along a track P and is supplied by an inclined portion k of a conveyer K supported by a truss Q, Fig. 2, which is pivotally connected to a truck R moving with the tower. The upper end of the inclined portion k of the conveyer delivers to a hopper J', Fig. 14, provided with shoots j, j' delivering in opposite directions to a conveyer S<2> carried by the horizontally adjustable shuttle S' which is mounted in a vertically adjustable cage S. The conveyer S<2> delivers to the ship U by an elevator T, or shoot T<1>, both of which may be raised or lowered by tackle. The elevator T comprises a casing V, Fig. 18, within which are mounted endless chains v carrying wings v<1> hinged to the chains and guided by guides v', v<4>. On the downward run, the wings are distended, but are folded on the upward run to economize space. If small vessels are to be loaded, or it is desired to trim or complete the lending of larger vessels, or to bunker vesels of any size, trimmers W, Fig. 20, may be used placed at various points along the piers, bulkheads, or on piles, warehouses, &c. These trimmers are supplied directly from the shoot C by conveyers 0 which are looped similarly to the conveyers K. Each trimmer comprises a conveyer z carried by a hinged boom Z<1> which is adjusted by screws or tackle z<1> and mounted in a frame w<3> supported by a turntablew<z> carried by a wheeled carriage.
