Abstract

Pharmaceutical compositions having anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anaesthetic, analgesic and anti-leukopenic effects comprise a neutral salt of lysozyme with a non-toxic, stable, inorganic or organic acid and an anti-histaminic compound which is completely compatible with said salt of lysozyme. The composition may contain 50-1000 parts by weight of the lysozyme salt per part by weight of anti-histaminic compound. Antihistaminics specified include chlorpheniramine, polaramine, parabromdylamine, carbinoxamine, diphenhydramine and pyrilamine. Salts of lysozyme and the antihistaminic may be formed with hydrochloric, sulphuric, phosphoric, acetic, maleic, citric and tartaric acids. The compositions may also contain a solid or liquid pharmaceutical carrier and may be formulated as tablets and capsules, preferably enteric-coated, or as a sterile, isotonic, aqueous solution buffered to pH 4-6.5 with a phosphate, citrate or tartrate buffer. Such a solution may additionally contain a non-toxic, water-soluble salt (e.g. Na, Cl, Ca Cl2, Na2SO4 and sodium phosphates) and/or a polymeric material (e.g. polyvinyl pyrrolidone and dextran).
