Abstract

A membrane for a fuel cell consists of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and a compound selected from the phosphates, vanadates, tung-states, arsenates, molybdates, phosphotung-states and phosphomolybdates of a metal of the 4th and 5th groups of the Periodic Table. The preferred compound is stannic phosphate. The membrane may be in the form of a rolled sheet. At least one side can contain a hydrogenation catalyst which may be deposited on a support. The catalyst may be Pt or Pt black. The support may be graphite or carbon tissue or fabric. The catalyst may be formed by reduction of a solution of chlorophatinic acid applied to the membrane. The reduction may be electro-chemical, chemical or thermal reduction. Alternatively a catalyst carried on a support may be pressed on to the membrane. The membrane may be impregnated with an electrolyte, e.g. sulphuric acid solution, and may be formed by initially mixing a solution of the binder in an organic solvent and the mixture obtained is mixed with a liquid, e.g. water, which is miscible with the solvent but does not dissolve the binder. The sponge-like product is washed with the liquid, dried and formed into a sheet. The solvent may be organic, e.g. a dialkylketone such as acetone or methylethylketone or a mixture of these.ALSO:A membrane for a fuel cell consists of an organic binder and stannic phosphate. The binder may be natural or synthetic rubber, or resin such as carboxymethyl cellulose, a polyvinyl ether, nitrile rubber, natural rubber or a mixture thereof. The membrane may be in the form of a rolled sheet and may be associated with a Pt hydrogenation catalyst which may be deposited on a carbon support. The membrane may be formed by initially mixing a solution of the binder in an organic solvent and the mixture obtained is mixed with a liquid, e.g. water, which is miscible with the solvent but does not dissolve the binder. The sponge-like product is washed with the liquid dried and formed into a sheet. The solvent may be a dialkylketone such as acetone and or methylethylketone.
