Abstract

1,110,401. Forming sheet material. WHESSOE Ltd. 1 June, 1965 [3 March, 1964], No. 8894/64. Heading B6J. [Also in Divisions B3 and B5] A method of forming a blank 5 of metal or other material comprises applying fluid pressure between the blank and a backing plate 2 which clamps the blank to a die 1, the force restraining inward movement of the edge of the blank being greater in regions of the blank experiencing most inward movement. The free edge 5A of the blank wrinkles during inward movement, the depth of the wrinkles and the restraining force they apply when being ironed out between the die and plate 2 being greater in the regions where most inward movement occurs. The depth of the wrinkles are controlled by recessing the plate at 7, or the die or both, Fig. 2-4 (not shown). The shape of the step 8 may vary at different points around the die. Towards the end of a forming operation, the clamping force applied by plate 2 is reduced, without loss of fluid from the die, to assist in forming sharp bends near the edge of the die.
