Abstract

1,109,612. Tubular catalytic polymerisation reactor. NATIONAL DISTILLERS & CHEMICALS CORPORATION. 27 Sept., 1965 [2 Oct., 1964], No. 12929/67. Divided out of 1,109,611. Headings B1F and B1X. A reactor for olefin polymerisation comprises a vertical reaction chamber 10 having a length: diameter ratio of at least 15:1, an inlet (75) at the top and at a plurality of points 12, 15, 20 along the reactor, an outlet at the bottom, a partition 39 between two of said plurality of inlets, a longitudinal agitator shaft 33 having a tapered end 50 and means within the reactor to rotate said shaft by axial engagement with said end; said shaft carrying two groups B, A of adjustable agitator blades 35, 34 which are respectively trapezoidal and pentagonal and extend radially to points at a distance from, and adjacent to, the wall of said reactor and are disposed to effect both radial and longitudinal mixing, the longitudinal mixing being greater above the partition and in the final zone of the reactor than immediately below the partition. As shown the reactor has jackets 40-45 for heat exchange media and the shaft has bearings 80, 81, although support is provided by thrust bearings (56, Fig. 7, not shown) at the top of the reactor which are bolted to the motor. Electrodes (70) and a thermocouple (71) are also provided.
