Metal-heating furnaces.-In a metallugical or other furnace, the air and gas nozzles D, D<1> are arranged at right-angles to one another with the gas nozzle D arranged at right-angles to the vertical branch B of an L-shaped combustion chamber and with the air nozzle in alinement therewith. the horizontal branch B' of the combustion chamber being flared or having inclined sides so as to spread out the flame laterally as it enters the furnace. Air may be admitted from the air pipe E to the gas pipe F at a distance from the nozzle D through a nipple d. The air and gas pipes may be heated by carrying them through the flue and across the top of the furnace.
