Abstract

1,109,598. Arc welding. VSESOJZNY NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT ELEKETROSVAROCHNOGO OBORUDOVANIA. 9 May, 1966, No. 20437/66. Heading H5H. [Also in Division B3] Apparatus for butt welding pipes 3, 3<SP>1</SP> comprises means (not shown) for establishing an arc between the butt ends of the pipes, clamps 1, 1<SP>1</SP> for holding the pipes, a winding 5 associated with the clamps which serves to create a magnetic field causing the arc to travel around the profile of the butt portions, and pneumatic drive means 4 adapted to force the pipe ends together for the butt welding operation by means of pivotally mounted levers 8 having bifurcated ends which bear on the clamps 1, 1<SP>1</SP>. The clamps which are held stationary during the preheating step slide on guide rods 6, 7, on one of which, the levers 8, 9 are pivotally mounted. The upsetting operation is effected immediately molten metal appears on the butt portions of the pipes. In a modified construction (Figs. 3, 4, not shown) the pipe clamps together with the electrical winding form a distinct subassembly and the levers and pneumatic drive means a separate sub-assembly the latter being portable and therefore applicable successively to a variety of pipe joints all of which may be preassembled with pipe clamps thereon ready for welding.
