Abstract
1,109,512. Mounting thermometers. MINISTER OF TRANSPORT. May 16, 1966 [Feb.17, 1965], No.6929/65. Headings G1D and GIN. The temperature of a granular aggregate which is being heated in a rotatable drum for mixture with tar or bitumen to provide road building materials, is measured by providing in the drum a trough 21, containing a temperature measuring device 28, pivoted at 24, and positioned so that material cascading in the drum from mixing vanes, as 13, falls successively into a portion 22 of the trough, abutments 26 limiting its pivotal movement, and then on to a portion 23 of the trough thereby tipping it and allowing material to leave by the end 31. The trough thus oscillates under the action of the falling aggregate, the material in the trough being continually renewed. The temperature measuring device may be a thermocouple or the bulb of a remote reading thermometer. In an alternative arrangement the trough 21 may be tripped by engagement between a cam 32 provided on the trough and the rotating vanes 13. Other described embodiments provide for the tilting of the trough 21 by use of a hammer operated by pins projecting inside the drum and rotating therewith, or by use of cam plates also fixed and rotating with the drum. Further, the trough 21 may be fixed to its supporting arm 25 and this, by suitable pivotal mounting, may be actuated from outside the drum using a rotating cam or electromagnetically operated mechanism. Also the trough 21 may be replaced by a hopper having an intermittently operated obturator at its lower end, and this may be a counterbalanced door which opens when a predetermined weight of material is present in the hopper, or it may be operated by an electromagnetic or other mechanical mechanism.
