1,109,374. Rotary-piston I. C. engines. N. S. U. MOTORENWERKE A, G, and WANKEL G. m. b. H. Nov.25, 1966 [NOV.27, 1965 ], No.52853/66. Heading F1F. A rotary-piston I. C. engine of the type comprising a housing 1 having a two-lobed epitrochoidal inner peripheral surface 2 and a planetarily rotatable three-sided piston 3 to carry out in sequence in each of three variable volume working chambers 10a, 10b, 1Oc the four phases of induction, compression, expansion and exhaust, includes a transfer passage in the form of a slot 14 controlled by a slide 16 to transfer, just before the completion of the expansion phase in chamber 10c, some of the hot gases of combustion to the next succeeding chamber 106 undergoing compression to increase the effective compression ratio above that determined by engine dimensions. The hot transferred gases supplement the heat of compression to permit ignition and efficient combustion of fuel injected through a fuel-injector 13 when operating under a diesel cycle. The quantity of gas fed back for a given cross-sectional area of slot 14 is dependent upon engine speed. Thus the higher the speed the less time the slot is open and hence less gas is fed back. To counteract this so that the amount of gas fed back is substantially constant irrespective of engine speed, the slide 16 is controlled by a speed governor so that at low speeds the slot 14 is reduced in crosssection and at high speeds increased. If the engine is to operate with spark-ignition on an Otto cycle the slide 16 may be moved fully inwards or a filler member inserted in the slot. The slot 14 is laterally offset with respect to a transverse central plane of the engine so that it and the centrally disposed exhaust port 12 are not controlled by one and the same portions of the radial seals 7. Alternatively the slot 14 may be inclined providing it is laterally clear of the exhaust port.
