Abstract

1,109,091. Sampling pulverized material. INTERNATIONAL COMBUSTION (HOLDINGS) Ltd. 22 Oct., 1964 [26 July, 1963], No. 29816/63. Heading B8N. [Also in Division F2] The access opening for the wall 1 of a pipe or vessel comprises a housing 4 having a first opening sealed to an opening in the walls at 3 and a second opening in which an openended sleeve 6 is secured at 5 in such a manner that it provides a chamber 7 around the sleeve and which connects with the bore of the sleeve adjacent the first opening, the chamber 7 having an inlet port at 3 to enable pressure fluid to be supplied from an air line connected to it at 14. The size of the chamber 7 and of its outlet can be adjusted with packing washers 11 available for predetermined cross-sectional areas. The opening in the sleeve is intended to provide access for a sampling device 20 or, in larger versions (not shown), for access for large pieces of equipment &c. and is normally closed by a screwed plug 18. The pipe 1 in the embodiment illustrated is conveying pulverized coal under pressure. The sampling device has an opensided scoop 21 connected through a cyclone to a sampling bottle. To insert the scoop 21 into the pipe pressure is first applied to the chamber 7. The plug 18 is then removed and whilst the escape of pressure from the chamber 7 prevents the coal from coming out of the pipe, the scoop is inserted into it and retained by a nut 22. The pressure is maintained until, after sampling, the scoop is withdrawn and the plug 18 is replaced. More than one opening 25, 26 may be provided in the wall of the pipe.
