Abstract

1,109,083. Thermionic cathode constructions. SONY CORPORATION. 14 April, 1965, No. 16007/65. Heading H1D. [Also in Division B3] A thermionic cathode comprises a graphite heating element 2 having a first or central part of reduced thickness compared to its ends with metallic leads 8 secured to a second part of the element by an intermediate layer containing a stable metal carbide formed integrally with the graphite heating element, and electron emissive material 3 on a Ni base 4 secured to the graphite also by an intermediate carbide layer. As shown, enlarged end sections of heater 2 are secured in recesses in a ceramic header 1, and are apertured to receive leads 8 of Ni, or Ni-Co or Ni-Fe alloys coated with a metal powder, e.g. Mo, W, Ti, V, Ta, Nb, Zr or Cr, in an organic binder. Upon heating at 1100‹ to 2000‹ C. in a non-oxidizing or inert atmosphere, the metal powder alloys with the leads and forms an integral carbide layer with the graphite. The emissive material, comprising Ba and Sr oxides, is similarly bonded to the graphite heater. The cathode assembly is mounted in the grid cup 10 of a cathode-ray tube gun between ceramic spacer 12 and retainer 13. To permit the heater to expand longitudinally, one end may extend freely into a slot in header 1, this end being secured to a Ni foil lead which is cemented to the lower end of the header, Fig. 7 (not shown). Specific examples and dimensions are given.
