Abstract

1,108,835. Lasers. LITTON INDUSTRIES Inc. 13 June, 1966 [17 June, 1965], No. 26331/66. Heading H1C. The conditions of motion of a body to which a laser is attached are determined by varying the optical path length of the laser in accordance with the motion and monitoring the laser output interferometrically. Laser resonator mirror 54 is mounted on a proof mass 56 resiliently supported by leaf-springs (not shown). *Acceleration of the device varies the distance between mirror 54 and mirror 52 of helium-neon laser 10, which shares a common gas envelope 14 with a laser 12. The outputs from the two lasers are directed on to a photo-detector 82, the rectified and amplified output of which is supplied to a counter 90 which counts the number of cycles of the beat frequency produced by interference between the light beams. As shown, the output of the counter may control the position of potentiometer slider 94 to vary the voltage applied to piezo-electric crystal 62, one electrode of which forms reflector 60 of laser 12, so that laser 12 tracks laser 10 to eliminate the beat frequency. Alternatively the counter output may be used to restore mirror 54 to its undeflected position so that laser 10 tracks reference laser 12. If neither mirror is repositioned the counter output indicates the velocity of proof mass 56.
