Abstract

1,183,492. Laser ranging. BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP. Ltd. 14 May, 1968 [15 May, 1967], No. 22464/67. Heading H4D. [Also in Division H1] The velocity of a moving target 11, Fig. 2, which may be a particle in a fluid, is measured by illuminating the target with a laser beam, feeding light scattered from the target into one end 15 of the laser 12 so as to heat the scattered light oscillations with the local oscillations in the laser resonator, and feeding the resulting modulated output signal through the opposite end 16 of the laser to a photo-detector 10. An electrical signal is then produced having a frequency equal to the Doppler shift frequency of the scattered light. The laser outputs at the opposing ends 15, 16 are arranged to be high and low, respectively. A prior art arrangement is described, Fig. 1, in which an interferometer is formed by the target 11 and a mirror 14, and the target is illuminated by a laser 12 through a partially reflecting beam splitter 13. The beams reflected from the target and the mirror 14 are recombined at the beam splitter and pass to a photo-detector 10.
