Abstract

In the alkaline polymerization at 100-270 DEG C. of a lactam with more than six ring members there is used as cocatalyst an aromatic polycarbodiimide containing at least three of the repeating units <FORM:1108721/C3/1> wherein R represents a C1- 4 alkyl group. The cocatalyst may amount to 0.2-5 wt. per cent (preferably 0.3-1.5%) of the lactam. Suitable lactams are caprolactam, enanthlactam, capryllactam, methyl capryl lactam and laurinlactam. Suitable catalysts are alkali metals and alkyls, hydrides, hydroxides, carbonate and lactam salts thereof, and Grignard reagents; these usually amount to 0.1-1.5 mol per cent of the lactam. In Examples 1-3 poly-(o:o-dimethyl)-p-phenylene carbodiimide and poly-(o:o-diisopropyl) - p - phenylene carbodiimide are used in conjunction with ethylmagnesium bromide or sodium caprolactam to polymerize caprolactam or laurinlactam. In comparative Example 4 diisopropyl carbodiimide and dicyclohexyl carbodiimide are used as cocatalysts.
