Abstract

Lactams having at least 5 ring carbon atoms are polymerized above their m.p. in the presence of an alkaline catalyst and as a cocatalyst a compound of formula <FORM:1076310/C3/1> where R is aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, or aromatic, R1 is H or Me, n is greater than 1 and p is greater than 2. Lactams specified include capro-, capryl- and dodecanolactams and mixture thereof. Catalysts specified include Na, K and alkali-metal/lactam salts, e.g. sodium caprolactamate. 0.1-4 mole per cent may be used. Cocatalysts specified include hexamethylene bis (triethylene glycol carbamate), dicyclohexyl methane - 4,41 - bis (triethylene glycol carbamate), tolylene bis (triethylene glycol carbamate), tolylene bis (heptaethylene glycol carbamate) and tolylene bis (triethylene glycol monomethyl ether carbamate). They may be derived from the corresponding polyalkylene glycol and diisocyanate. 0.05-2 Mole per cent of cocatalyst may be used. The polymerization may be under an inert atmosphere at a temperature below the m.p. of the polymer product or between 140 DEG and 180 DEG C. The cocatalyst may be added to the lactam which is melted before addition of the catalyst or alternatively the cocatalyst may be added last. The polymerization may take place in a mould.
