Abstract

1,108,605. Temperature alarms. INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CO. Ltd. 18 Jan., 1966 [25 Jan., 1965], No. 3242/65. Heading G4N. [Also in Division G1] A positive temperature coefficient resistor or a series thereof, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Fig. 5, is supplied with a constant current from a source 6, and when one or more of the resistors undergoes a sharp increase in resistivity due to thermal runaway upon attainment of a particular temperature, a voltage sensing circuit, responsive to rate of change of voltage across the resistor or the series of resistors, operates an indicator and alarm. The voltage sensing circuit is connected at 7, 8 across the series of resistors 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and the resistor which has abruptly increased in value is identified by arranging a voltage limiting device such as a Zener diode across each resistor, each diode defining a different limiting voltage, and noting the magnitude of the increase in voltage registered by the indicator. The fact that the alarm is operated by a rate of change of voltage ensures that it is not erroneously operated by large but slowly occurring changes in indicated voltage arising from small changes in all the resistors due to slight variations in ambient temperature.
