In an intensity-modulated cathode ray tube display system for use with radar, echosounding, and ultrasonic flaw-detection apparatus, the sensitivity of the apparatus is varied for successive transmitted pulses and the echoes produced from a given reflecting object by the successive transmitted pulses are displayed spaced apart on the screen. In a flawdetection embodiment, echo signals from a testpiece 9 are displayed along the horizontal timebase of a cathode ray tube 14. The gain of an amplifier 11 through which the echo signals are passed is varied for successive transmitted pulses, and successive sweeps of the trace on the tube 14 are displaced in the vertical direction to produce a display in which successive echoes from a given object are displayed above each other. Comparison of the traces at different sensitivities enables large amplitude echoes (which result in defocussing of the luminous spot of the trace at high sensitivities) to be distinguished from small-amplitude echoes of extended flaws. Voltage waveforms for controlling the gain of amplifier 11 and for displacing the trace vertically may be of staircase or sawtooth form, are synchronized with the transmitted pulses, and may be derived from generators 17 or from ganged rotary potentiometers. In various modifications, the sensitivity of the apparatus may be varied by varying the amplitude of the transmitted pulses, varying the electrical damping of the transducer system (which may have separate or combined transmitting and receiving transducers), or varying the limiting or clipping level of an echo amplitude selector.
