Abstract

751,156. Ultrasonic liquid depth indicator. SPERRY PRODUCTS, Inc. May 3, 1954 [June 29, 1953], No. 12836/54. Class 118(2) An ultrasonic device for indicating the depth of liquid in a tank, which has no moving parts and is independent of the acoustic velocity in the liquid, comprises a strip 11 of acoustic conducting material mounted in the top of a tank 10 by means of electrically insulating material 40 and extending downwards to a point below the minimum level to be indicated. An electroacoustic transducer 12 is attached on one side 15 of the strip near the top and consists of a piezo-electric crystal 32 mounted on a wedge 33 such that only surface waves are generated in the strip 11. A series of holes P1, P2 ... &c., are formed in the strip 11 transversely to the direction of propagation of the waves and at regular intervals along the length of the strip. Pulses of ultrasonic energy are fed to the crystal 32 (for example, sixty times a second) and echoes from the holes P1, P2 ... &c., are received and fed to the vertical deflector plates or intensifier grid of a cathode ray oscilloscope (C.R.O.) whose horizontal sweep is synchronized with the pulse transmission. This produces a series of "graduation marks" on the screen. If the tank contains liquid the surface waves are substantially damped below the point at which the strip 11 enters the liquid and reflections from the holes below this point will disappear and the depth of the liquid may be ascertained from the number of reflections on the C.R.O. The holes P1, P2 ... &c., are arranged in a step-like manner, the near holes being further below the surface 15 and the more distant holes progressively nearer the surface, so that the echo signals will be of substantially constant magnitude. The holes are preferably sealed to exclude the liquid.
